SeaMonkey and macOS Ventura

Attention macOS users! The current SeaMonkey release crashes during startup after upgrading to macOS 13 Ventura. Until we have a fix we advise you not to upgrade your macOS installation to Ventura. No usable crash information is generated and this might take a bit longer than usual to fix. This is not a problem with Monterey 12.6.1 or any lower supported macOS version so might even be an Apple bug.

The problem is tracked in Bug 1797696.

Mercurial Paris Conference 2022

Mercurial Conference Paris 2022

If you are a developer then you need some sort of version control system (vcs). While git gets the front seat mostly these days, there are others available. One of them is Mercurial. Guess what, Mozilla is using it and so are we. While we use a git repository for our 2.53 releases and some temporary stuff only, all our development is done using Mercurial. We just think it is really the best and most flexible vcs available.

If you want to check it out or hear more about it, we recommend attending the Mercurial Conference 2022 in Paris.

Automatic Updates

Automatic updates for 2.53.x releases have been switched on. These will, with a few exceptions, work without any changes for version 2.53.5 and later.

For earlier 2.53.x releases and those releases that cannot be automatically upgraded, including 2.53.5b1, the easiest option is to manually install the latest full version available for download here.

These changes will only work if you have administrator permissions and, on Linux, updates have not been disabled by the distributor.

IRC support channel moved to libera.chat

In the last month freenode became a battleground between former admins and management. If you want to know more just use your favorite search engine and you will find all the information you need.

Because of this we planned for some time now to move our irc presence to libera.chat in the next few weeks. Unfortunately freenode forced us today to do this on short notice. All registered nicknames were removed and channels basically left without operators and owners. This is not acceptable and at this point in time we no longer have any interest in having a presence there.

Effective immediately all official SeaMonkey support on freenode has ended. We are now on libera chat. If you are a cZ user we suggest using 2.53.8b1. Full support for it has been added to the bundled chatZilla and you don't need to set up the libera network manually. There were no problems reported against the beta and the final 2.53.8 version will be spun soon.

You can access the SeaMonkey irc channel with the following link SeaMonkey irc libera chat channel. We are looking forward to see you there. Full logging for the channel will be set up soon.

Change of support options

Hi folks hope you are all well and healthy. We want to announce a change in our support groups. Mozilla will turn off the nntp lights and so the newgroups mozilla.support.seamonkey and mozilla.dev.apps.seamonkey will go away soon. These were actually not real nntp groups but mailing lists mixed in with nntp. The mailing lists have been moved to google groups. The nntp servers will be archived and then switched off. We do not have a final date for this yet. SeaMonkey is also a nntp client so as a replacement a new nntp group alt.comp.software.seamonkey has been created.

As usual we would like to remind everyone that we also have release notes which contain a list of known problems and, if there are any, also solutions for them. Also keep in mind that the SeaMonkey council mailing address is not a help line. If you are unable to solve a problem using the normal support options please file a bug in Bugzilla. Especially problems with specific websites should also be discussed in the support groups first. We are working on enhancing web compatibility but many sites also just do incorrect browser detection and present a flawed site.

SeaMonkey and the future

Wow! A new release and two news items together. What is cooking?

With the SeaMonkey 2.49.5 release the 2.49.x line comes to an end. Unless a catastrophic bug is discovered 2.49.5 will be the last ESR 52 based version. Backporting security fixes and at the same time working on the next, already overdue, major release is not possible with the few remaining developers.

Plans are to do further interim 2.53 versions based on a much enhanced Gecko 56 base while working on bringing you the next ESR 60 based 2.57 version. After 2.57 we will decide about the future. The current Mozilla Gecko codebase has seen a flow of constant major changes and api removals in the last 2 years and is no longer really usable for our needs. By the end of the year the SeaMonkey project is expected to be completely independent of Mozilla. We will see how this pans out but we are doing our best and already have a new infrastructure in place where we do builds and website hosting.

We would also like to remind everyone again that this a community project independent of Mozilla. So if you want to continue seeing future SeaMonkey releases please help by either donating money or even better help out with development. We are still committed and hope you are too.

SeaMonkey 2.49.5 released

The SeaMonkey project is proud to present SeaMonkey 2.49.5: The new release of the all-in-one Internet suite is available for download now! Automatic upgrades from previous versions are, for most configurations, disabled for this release. If you need to upgrade from an earlier version, please download the full installer from the downloads section and install SeaMonkey 2.49.5 manually over the previous version.

This release adds officially supported Windows x64 and Linux x64 versions. If you want to install the Windows x64 version please download the full installer and uninstall the old x86 release first. Your profile data will be kept during an uninstall. Support for the macOS x86 unified binary was dropped because we are now using a more current macOS development environment.

Help squashing bugs in mail and news

Our Thunderbird friends ask for help squashing bugs. If you have some spare time help them and also us because SeaMonkey and Thunderbird use a shared codebase for mail and news.

Some Details from the announcement:

We are grateful to have a very active set of users who generate a lot of bug reports and we are requesting your help in sorting them, an activity called bug triage. We’re holding “Bug Days” on (all day, EU and US timezones) and (EU and US timezones until 4pm EDT). During these bug days we will log on and work as a community to triage as many bugs as possible. With several of us working at the same time we can help each other in real time – answering questions, sharing ideas ideas, and enjoying being with like-minded people.

No coding or special skills are required, and you don’t need to be an expert or long term user of Thunderbird. Some things you’ll be doing if you participate:

But we hope you’ll join us on the 8th or the 13th via #tb-qa on Mozilla’s IRC so that we can put these bugs in their place which helps make Thunderbird even better. If you have any questions feel free to email Ryan.

Visit the Thunderbird Blog to see the full announcement.

Download problems with NoScript active

If you are using NoScript you might encounter a certificate error when trying to download SeaMonkey from this site. NoScript tries to force an https connection for an http only site. It is not a NoScript problem but how the Mozilla server, from which downloads are delivered, is configured.

In this case please add download.cdn.mozilla.net to the NoScript "Never force secure (HTTPS) connections" options or turn off NoScript for this download only. The settings are located in the NoScript options under "Advanced->HTTPS".

Support For SeaMonkey 1.x Dropped

In January 2006, SeaMonkey 1.0 was released, a 1.1 release followed a year later. Another three years later, the SeaMonkey project is discontinuing support for the SeaMonkey 1.x series today in favor of SeaMonkey 2.0, which is not only more modern, but also maintained for stability and security problems.

As the SeaMonkey 1.x series no longer receives security updates, due to resource constraints, the SeaMonkey team strongly urges users of that series to upgrade. Additionally, the team continues to strongly urge people still using the old Mozilla Suite or Netscape 4, 6 or 7 to upgrade to the new SeaMonkey 2.0 version. All these older software packages suffer from a large, and steadily increasing, number of security vulnerabilities because they are no longer being maintained.

Everyone on reasonably modern operating systems is urged to switch to the newest release available for free download from the open source project's website at www.seamonkey-project.org, providing the familiar suite functionality in a remodernized application with additional features and fully up to date security.
For the few who can't afford that, a last 1.x release is available. SeaMonkey 1.1.19 does fix a few security issues, but not all known security vulnerabilites, some of which may even be grave. Those are only fixed in the new SeaMonkey 2.0, which will continue to be maintained for quite some time and updated for any security issues as they might arise, while the team is working on evolving the well-known suite even further in future versions.

March 10, 2010

The SeaMonkey Project Turns 5

On March 10, 2005, Mozilla Foundation announced the transition plan that paved the way for the community to take over development, release and project management of Mozilla's application suite. This agreement formed the base of today' SeaMonkey project, which came to be after a number of IRC meetings where we decided we'd first work on releasing the then-available suite code as a first community version while starting work on transforming the suite to an application built upon the new Mozilla platform also in use by Firefox and Thunderbird.

On July 2, we announced the new name of the suite and community project to be "SeaMonkey", September 15 marked our first Alpha release, on December 2, we announced our new logo, and on January 30, 2006, we were able to release SeaMonkey 1.0 to the public.

While we released a slightly improved 1.1 based on the old one a year later, work continued on the version based on the new platform, culminating in a completely reworked SeaMonkey 2.0 that more or less was the first release our new team developed from ground up, going public on October 27, 2009.

5 years after the transition plan announcement, we are about to end support for the SeaMonkey 1.x series and leave the aged "xpfe" platform finally behind us, while we're working on a new 2.1 release that brings more features and closes the gap to Firefox and Thunderbird even further.

So, while we're celebrating the 5th anniversary, the SeaMonkey project is as active as ever, if not even more, providing the most modern Internet suite available today with SeaMonkey 2.0 and working on improving it even more.

Still, we need your help to make our software and project even better in the next 5 years!

SeaMonkey 1.1.18 Security Release

Today, the SeaMonkey project released a new version of its all-in-one internet suite. SeaMonkey 1.1.18 closes several security vulnerabilities and fixes a few smaller problems found in previous versions. With that, SeaMonkey stays at the same level of security as its sibling Thunderbird 2, which has been issuing updates for the same problems recently as well.

The SeaMonkey team urges users of older SeaMonkey versions, including the SeaMonkey 1.0.x series, which no longer receives security updates, to upgrade. Additionally, the team continues to strongly urge people still using the old Mozilla Suite or Netscape 4, 6 or 7 to upgrade to the new SeaMonkey 1.1.18 version. All these older software packages suffer from a large and steadily increasing number of security vulnerabilities because they are no longer being maintained. SeaMonkey 1.1.18 is a modern drop-in replacement, providing the same familiar suite functionality with additional features and fully up to date security.

SeaMonkey 1.1.17 Released

Today, the SeaMonkey project released a new version of its all-in-one internet suite. SeaMonkey 1.1.17 closes several security vulnerabilities and fixes a few smaller problems found in previous versions. The SeaMonkey team urges users of older SeaMonkey versions, including the SeaMonkey 1.0.x series, which no longer receives security updates, to upgrade. Additionally, the team continues to strongly urge people still using the old Mozilla Suite or Netscape 4, 6 or 7 to upgrade to the new SeaMonkey 1.1.17 version. All these older software packages suffer from a large and steadily increasing number of security vulnerabilities because they are no longer being maintained. SeaMonkey 1.1.17 is a modern, drop-in replacement, providing the same familiar suite functionality with additional features and fully up to date security.

SeaMonkey 1.1.2 Released - Team Urges Users to Upgrade

Despite a simultaneous release of a last update to the SeaMonkey 1.0 series, SeaMonkey 1.0.9, the project team strongly urges users to upgrade to SeaMonkey 1.1.2, as the old 1.0 series will not be maintained further. The 1.1 series, on the other hand, is being actively maintained and also features some new functionality such as spell checking in web forms and mail tags.

In addition to users of older SeaMonkey versions, the SeaMonkey team strongly urges users of the old Mozilla Suite and Netscape 4, 6 or 7 to upgrade to SeaMonkey 1.1.2. The SeaMonkey project team took over development of the all-in-one internet application suite after Netscape and later the Mozilla Foundation ceased to work on it. Under the new name, users are provided with current versions of the established software package.

SeaMonkey 1.0.6 and 1.1 Beta

Keeping the net secure and previewing new features

The SeaMonkey Council is pleased to announce two new releases simultaneously:
First, SeaMonkey 1.0.6 continues the successful 1.0 series of the SeaMonkey all-in-one internet suite, fixing several security vulnerabilities and various stability issues (see the release notes for more information). The SeaMonkey Council recommends that all users upgrade to this stable, well-tested version.
Second, the SeaMonkey project has been working hard on improving its software even further, adding new features such as tab previews, spell checking in the browser, an e-mail tagging system, an improved Linux startup script, better new mail notifications, an updated ChatZilla IRC client, and more. A new preview showing off those improvements, SeaMonkey 1.1 Beta, was also released today. This version is intended for developers and testers (but not yet for end users). The SeaMonkey Council encourages interested people to test the Beta and help identify the remaining bugs. Be sure to read the release notes before testing though, as they list not only the new features but also a number of known issues. Any problems that are not already known should be reported to the developers via Bugzilla so that the final SeaMonkey 1.1 release can continue the traditional high quality expected from the Mozilla suite and the SeaMonkey 1.0 series.

SeaMonkey 1.0 Released

The SeaMonkey Council is proud to announce SeaMonkey 1.0, the first end-user release of their internet suite. This open source application, available as a free download from its mozilla.org-hosted website, features a state-of-the-art web browser and powerful email client, as well as a WYSIWYG web page composer and a feature-rich IRC chat client. For web developers, mozilla.org's DOM inspector and JavaScript debugger tools are included as well. SeaMonkey 1.0 is one of the most complete, powerful, and secure internet software packages available today.

SeaMonkey comes with the the look and feel familiar to users of its predecessors, the Mozilla Application Suite and Netscape Communicator packages, but adds many new features as well as back-end changes that improve security, stability and performance. Some highlights are: drag&drop reordering of tabs, phishing e-mail detection, support for a single shared inbox when using multiple accounts, and support for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG).

The SeaMonkey project is a community-based project hosted at mozilla.org that emerged around Mozilla's suite codebase when the Mozilla Foundation announced it would discontinue further development of its suite product. The new project is dedicated to keeping this suite alive and developing it into an even more modern and complete internet software package.

December 19, 2005

SeaMonkey 1.0 Beta

Today, the SeaMonkey Council announces a new developer release, SeaMonkey 1.0 Beta. Compared to the Alpha version released in September, SeaMonkey 1.0 Beta enhances the product with new features like tab drag and drop, but also is the first release branded with the new SeaMonkey logo, which was unveiled earlier this month. While much of the core code is shared with the popular Firefox 1.5 browser, SeaMonkey comes with the look and feel familiar to users of its ancestors, the Mozilla Application Suite and Netscape Communicator packages.

SeaMonkey 1.0 Beta features more than just a state-of-the-art web browser, though: the application comes with a powerful email client as well as a WYSIWYG web page composer and a feature-rich IRC chat application. For web developers, mozilla.org's DOM inspector and JavaScript debugger tools are included as well. SeaMonkey 1.0 Beta is one of the most powerful and secure internet software packages currently available, even though this release is only for testing.

This public Beta release includes all features planned for the SeaMonkey 1.0 final release, which is expected for January 2006. Due to a large number of bug fixes, it should also be even more stable and convenient to use than the previous Alpha release, and the SeaMonkey Council calls for testers to use the product and report any further glitches they might find, so that the 1.0 release can be not only the best available internet suite in terms of features, but also in quality, security and stability.

The SeaMonkey project is a community-based project hosted at mozilla.org that emerged around Mozilla's suite codebase when the Mozilla Foundation announced it would discontinue further development of its suite product. The new project is dedicated to keeping this suite alive under the name "SeaMonkey" and developing it into an even more modern and complete internet software package.

New Logo For SeaMonkey

After months of submissions and selection processes, the SeaMonkey Council is announcing a new logo for its project and application. The project's initial call for logo submissions was answered with no fewer than 197 different proposals submitted by Mozilla and SeaMonkey community members. From those 197 logos, amongst which were many good options, the Council selected the new logo after many discussions and a long decision process.

The new artwork centers around an abstract figure resembling a "Sea Monkey", colored in a light, cyan/blue color, standing out from a dark blue circle with a wave pattern in the middle. This design, created by Alex Butin, not only looks professional and polished, but also fits perfectly as an icon on a modern computer desktop and is easily recognizable even in small sizes. Additionally, the look matches the rest of the mozilla.org family (Firefox, Thunderbird, Camino, Sunbird) quite well. And while the soft shapes and color shades create a very polished impression, the waves and the figure make people feel the new dynamic the internet suite application has gained through the new project.

SeaMonkey 1.0 Beta, the first testing release including that artwork, is planned for release within the next few weeks, with a final SeaMonkey 1.0 release soon after that. Development versions, so-called "nightly builds", should have the new logo and artwork available within the next few days.

September 15, 2005

SeaMonkey 1.0 Alpha

The SeaMonkey Council is pleased to announce its first release, SeaMonkey 1.0 Alpha. Developed from the codebase of the previously successful Mozilla Application Suite, SeaMonkey 1.0 Alpha contains lots of new features, and numerous enhancements and bugfixes compared to the last Mozilla suite versions. Internally, much of the core code is shared with the current Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 browser, but from the outside, it represents the look and feel that long-time Mozilla and Netscape users have learned to love.

SeaMonkey 1.0 Alpha features more than just a state-of-the-art web browser, though: the application comes with a powerful email client as well as a WYSIWYG web page composer and a feature-rich IRC chat application. For web developers, mozilla.org's DOM inspector and JavaScript debugger tools are included as well. SeaMonkey 1.0 Alpha is one of the most powerful and secure internet software packages currently available, even though this release is only for testing.

Note that SeaMonkey 1.0 Alpha does not presently include official SeaMonkey artwork, as the SeaMonkey project is still open to logo submissions from its community. The new logo will be selected from these submissions and integrated into the upcoming SeaMonkey 1.0 Beta, which will be the last version before SeaMonkey 1.0 ships later this year.

The SeaMonkey project is a community-based project at mozilla.org that emerged around Mozilla's suite codebase when the Mozilla Foundation announced it would discontinue further development of its suite product. The new project is dedicated to keeping this suite alive under the name "SeaMonkey" and developing it into an even more modern and complete internet software package.

Submit Your SeaMonkey Logo!

Project seeking for new community-created artwork

While current experimental "nightly" builds of the SeaMonkey application as well as the upcoming SeaMonkey 1.0 Alpha testing release feature a rather primitive logo, the project seeks more professional artwork for the future. Everyone with sufficient graphical skills is invited to help, as the new logo will be selected from community submissions. For more about criteria, and information on how to submit your proposal, please see the SeaMonkey artwork page.

SeaMonkey Project Continues Internet Suite

Former "Mozilla Application Suite" Code sees new development from independent group

When the Mozilla Foundation announced its "transition plan" for the long-lived Mozilla-branded application suite, this move meant not only a refocus of the Foundation to its new premier products Firefox and Thunderbird, but also a transition of new suite code development to an independent group. This group now is proud to announce its existence and its new project name, "SeaMonkey".

The SeaMonkey name was adopted by the project leading group (dubbed "SeaMonkey Council") after considering a long list of community-proposed names - it was decided that the long-lived internal code name still suited the project best. It was no easy decision, but it has a certain appeal - the suite is already known by SeaMonkey within the developer community. The council is working on having this name trademarked with the help of the Mozilla Foundation.

While the Foundation doesn't consider the new SeaMonkey application to be an officially supported upgrade path for Mozilla suite users, it provides the newly founded project with assistance in the form of much-needed project infrastructure, and cooperates with SeaMonkey developers. Development of SeaMonkey produces many improvements which are contributed back to the Mozilla codebase, much of which is shared with products including Firefox and Thunderbird.

The group is planning to deliver an Alpha version of its first release, SeaMonkey 1.0, within the next few weeks. Users of Mozilla 1.7.x or even the Mozilla 1.8 Alpha and Beta releases will see a new, improved version of the application they are used to. Netscape 7.x users will also feel at home with the new SeaMonkey suite.

SeaMonkey contains a state-of-the-art web browser and a feature-rich mail and newsgroups client, along with a simple yet powerful HTML editor, web development tools and an IRC chat application.

On the web, the SeaMonkey project can currently be found at its mozilla.org address, http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ - the project leading team (SeaMonkey Council) can be contacted via email at seamonkey-council@mozilla.org.
